Valdosta State University is celebrating 50 Years of Integration: A Celebration of Inclusion this academic year. In 1963, Valdosta State College (VSC) admitted Drewnell Thomas and Robert Pierce, DSC_0192_webJr., local Valdosta students who met the standards for admission at VSC, despite having attended a segregated high school. Thomas and Pierce were the first African American students to peacefully integrate Valdosta State College on September 18, 1963 without violence or protest. They are regarded as pioneers who helped to forge the way for thousands of students, staff, faculty, and administrators of different ethnicities and backgrounds to become part of the university’s historical and cultural legacy.  Today, more than fifty nationalities are represented at Valdosta State University.
